Farewell and thank you from NIHR ARC NWL
NIHR ARC Northwest London: Impact and Legacy
In light of NIHR’s decision to move towards a single Pan-London Applied Research Collaboration, and to bring the three regional London ARCs to a close, we considered it essential to pause, reflect, and formally acknowledge the contribution and significance of NIHR ARC Northwest London within the NIHR infrastructure.
Delivering impact for the health and care system
NIHR ARC Northwest London exemplified NIHR’s commitment to applied research that addresses the priorities of the NHS, local authorities, and wider health and care partners. The programme focused on generating actionable evidence and translating research into policy, practice, and service improvement. Impact was achieved not only through high-quality research outputs, but through collaboration with system partners to ensure that evidence was timely, relevant, and capable of driving real-world change for patients and populations.
Advancing inclusion and reducing health inequalities
In line with NIHR’s strategic focus on inclusion, the NIHR ARC Northwest London placed strong emphasis on engaging communities and incorporating lived experience into research design, delivery, and interpretation. By valuing community knowledge alongside academic and professional expertise, the programme supported more inclusive, community-rooted research approaches. This work contributed to addressing health inequalities and ensuring that research better reflected the needs of underserved and marginalised populations.
Building capacity and capability across the system
NIHR ARC Northwest London made a sustained contribution to research capacity building across academic, clinical, and community settings. The programme supported the development of researchers, practitioners, and community partners with the skills and confidence to engage in applied research and co-production. Through partnerships, training, and collaborative working, the ARC strengthened local and regional capability to generate and use evidence to improve health and care.
Ensuring sustainability through partnerships and ways of working
The NIHR ARC Northwest London demonstrated that sustainable impact is underpinned by strong relationships, trust, and shared ways of working. By embedding research within service and community contexts, and by fostering long-term partnerships, the programme created foundations that extend beyond its formal lifespan. The values, networks, and approaches developed through NIHR ARC Northwest London will continue to inform future applied research activity within the evolving NIHR landscape.
We extend our sincere thanks to the communities who shared their experiences, the practitioners and system partners who collaborated openly, and the researchers who committed to inclusive and translational approaches. Their collective efforts shaped NIHR ARC Northwest London into a programme of lasting value.
As this chapter concludes, the legacy of NIHR ARC Northwest London endures. The programme’s contribution to impact, inclusion, capacity building, and sustainability will continue through the people and partnerships that carry this work forward. In this respect, the transition represents not only the conclusion of a programme, but a continuation of NIHR’s shared commitment to improving health and care through applied research.
